Gwangalli and Haeundae are about the sea and the bridge — but if you want all of Busan in one frame, the answer is Hwangnyeongsan. The beacon observatory looks down from on high, city lights spreading below like a painting, for a completely different kind of awe than the sea views. This guide covers transit, timing and parking — because the real hurdle here is simply getting up there.

What the Hwangnyeongsan beacon observatory is

Hwangnyeongsan is one of the high points near the center of Busan, and the beacon observatory at the top gives a near-270° overlook of Gwangalli, Haeundae, downtown and the harbor. Because it covers the widest sweep, local photographers make the trip specifically for the “whole of Busan” shot.

Getting there: this is the key part

The biggest hurdle at Hwangnyeongsan is transit. The mountain road winds and public transport is inconvenient, so plan ahead:

• Taxi (most recommended): a taxi straight up from Gwangalli or Seomyeon is the fastest, and the best value if you’re only there for the view. For the way back, ask the driver to leave a contact or use a ride-hailing app (Kakao T) — cabs aren’t always waiting at the top.
• Private car / rental: most flexible if you want to hit several night-view spots in one go (e.g. Hwangnyeongsan + The Bay 101).
• Bus: gets you to the foot of the mountain to transfer, but service is sparse and the last stretch is a long walk — not advised after dark.

Best timing and parking

• Catch the sunset-to-night transition: arrive before sunset to see the city turn red, then wait for the lights to come on — this window is the most beautiful. Check the day’s sunset time and arrive 30 minutes early.
• Parking: there’s a lot near the summit beacon, but spaces are limited on weekend evenings — drive up early.
• Dress warm: the summit is colder and windier than downtown, so bring an extra layer.
