Why do a Gijang day trip

Gijang is about a 30–40 minute drive from Haeundae, making it a great half-day to full-day side trip. Visit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple in the morning, have king crab for lunch at Gijang Market, and if you have the afternoon free, add Lotte World Busan — a mix of temple, food, and theme park in one day. Even in Busan’s busiest travel seasons, Gijang stays relatively uncrowded, which is why it’s a popular add-on day for travelers already based in Haeundae or Gwangalli.

Haedong Yonggungsa, timed right

Unlike most Korean temples tucked into the mountains, Haedong Yonggungsa is built right on the seaside rocks, so the temple architecture and the crashing waves come together in one view. Crowds peak around midday, so if you want quieter photos, aim for right after opening in the early morning or toward sunset. It’s especially known for its sunrise views, so an early start rewards you with the best light.

Lotte World Busan and the Osiria resort area

Lotte World Busan sits inside Gijang’s Osiria resort area, which also includes a large aquarium and other leisure facilities alongside the rides — enough to fill a full day between attractions and sea-view landscaping. For families, a morning at Haedong Yonggungsa followed by an afternoon in Osiria keeps travel time short and the day efficient.

Beyond king crab: more of Gijang’s coastal flavors

Gijang King Crab Street is famous for steaming crab fresh off the boat, but a short trip further up the coast reveals more of the region’s seasonal food. The Daebyeon Port area is known for anchovy fishing, with a seasonal festival in spring serving fresh raw and stewed anchovy dishes. Gijang is also known for its seaweed and kelp — good enough that many Koreans specifically seek out Gijang seaweed for the birthday seaweed soup. Gijang Market sells these dried seafood products alongside king crab, making it a good stop for edible souvenirs too.

Getting there

A bus or taxi from Haeundae or the airport is the easiest way to get here, or you can take the Donghae Line train to Gijang or Osiria station. If you’re not driving, booking an airport pickup or private car service for the day can save you the wait for bus transfers. Haedong Yonggungsa, King Crab Street, and Lotte World Busan are all a bit spread out, so if you’re trying to fit everything into one day, a private car or a set half-day tour will save you time over public transit.

Visiting by season

Spring brings the Daebyeon anchovy festival alongside cherry blossoms, making for a busy but rewarding season. Summer is good for a breezy walk along the coastal trail. Autumn foliage adds color to the cliffside views, and winter is king crab’s peak season, making it a favorite time for a food-focused trip.
